Foods are substances found around the map and can be eaten by an animal instantly upon biting (hitting) it. They are immobile, won’t be affected by buoyancy or sinking, and will grant XP to the animal that ate it. Diet is the food that a specific animal can eat.

Spawning and Mechanics[ | ]

Foods do not spawn randomly, but spawn in the area highlighted by mapmakers in the Foods Layer (see Map Making for more information). Mapmakers can also determine the quantity of food, the type of food, and the spawn and respawn time of the food that spawns in an area. Food can be set to spawn only in water, and in the terrains layer, food can be set to spawn on the terrain as well (The type of the terrain food is determined by the type of the terrain, the quantity of terrain food can’t be determined by the mapmaker). There are no rules restricting any food from spawning in any place, so basically you can make any food spawn anywhere.

Apparently, some food spawns are not determined by the mapmaker themselves and will only spawn as events of the game. For example, bird poop can’t be spawned by the mapmaker and will only spawn every 10 seconds underneath a Seagull. Some certain props also spawn food automatically without needing a mapmaker to manage them.

Food-like Entities[ | ]

These entities are similar to food, but they have health bars and cannot be eaten in a single bite. Like food, however, they grant XP upon biting them. Like meat, a bone-spitting animation is also shown after taking a bite of these entities.

Skeletons come from dead players(tier9 and tier10) and can only be bitten by animals Tier1 to Tier 7 and coelacanth (higher tier animals simply pass through the skeleton without biting it). Hermit crab shells spawn naturally but can be picked up and carried around by Hermit Crabs.

Usage[ | ]

Foods grant XP and is essential for a playable animal to evolve. They can also heal damaged animals and regenerate their boost so they can continue to fight or survive. Some foods are a part of an animal’s ability, where it can use to fool or damage their foes. In conclusion, foods are essential in every game modes and a map without food can’t be considered as a real map.

Trivia[ | ]

  • Like animals, some food’s IDs are different from their in-game names. For example, the plankton is actually called food in the game files.
  • Like other map elements, mapmakers also take food spawns very seriously. They should make sure the food spawned are not too much and not too less to maintain a fair gameplay.
  • Tier 1 to Tier 6 animals can do the sweep trick to evolve quickly. It’s easy to do it, just stay near the ground and boost forward, and you’ll eat a ton of floor algae. This is recommended to do in FFA or TFFA to boost evolving speed, and in Pearl Defense matches if you are still low tier and joined a match that is started for a long time. Be careful, as you may end up boosting into a Tiger Shark’s waiting mouth!
  • Shells and Skeletons are not considered as food since they can't be eaten instantly, and can't be spawned manually as well.
  • Bird Poop and Dam Food are the only two types of food that can't be spawned manually.
  • Coconuts hold the distinction of having the least amount of animals capable of eating it, being pelicans and coconut crabs.
  • AIs are not able to eat food, at all.
